People subconsciously exhibit vulnerability and complexity their emotions when portrayed in their solitude. This image has led me to revisit a scene that has been replayed throughout my childhood–my grandmother contemplatively sipping tea early in the morning. By returning to this event in my live-sitting, I capture her thoughts and intrepid spirit at the start of the day.

I use an acrylic grisaille under my oil paint to explore intricacies in the colors and rhythms of the skin. Soft lighting is also employed to depict the illusive and hazy quality of memories as seen from the present. I honor my subjects through mindful observation to details that enhance the mood and illustrate the subject in their entirety.
